Glen, yeah, lots of aftershocks. Yesterday there are some in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands region...farther southwest. The link shows that the likely fault strike WNW (as does the focal mechanism), so these recent quakes would not be on the fault....but are logically triggered. The link says the rupture is 300 km-long. The slips they determine seem too small...maximum near 4 m. I suspect that the actual rupture is shorter, with greater slip. But, hey, I'm not a seismologist (but I was right about the first Sumatra quake in a discussion with a group of seismologists: none of them believed that the rupture was as long as the aftershock zone and kind of "dissed" me for suggesting it.) The distribution of large aftershocks in the first 24 hours may give the size of the fault that broke...it looks more like 200 km than 300 km, but I did not do the distance calculation between the extremities.
