Thanks, Chris. Your guess that the quake occurred in the lithospheric mantle does sort of beg the question, though. What is mantle brittle enough to host earthquakes doing at that depth outside of a subduction zone. Perhaps the weight of the volcano has pressed lithosphere down to that depth, and it hasn't had time to soften yet from the heat . . . And, yes, I agree that finding educated guesses with details about the cause of the quakes hasn't been easy. Pity, 'cause information like that is what I find most interesting geologically and seismologically. I believe you have the spelling of Maui right, with one "i".
