Re: AGU special session Hawaii quake: John V question?

Heartland wife is at AGU, so can't ask her right now, but works with ocean crust. I'm assuming that, like in continental areas, there is a fair amount of mantle that is part of the lithosphere...at least far from spreading centers (Hawaii is on old crust far from spreading center). One of the abstracts speculated that the volcanism in that area had made something brittle...crust or lithospheric mantle or both. Part of my interest is whether the earthquake is well-enough understood to determine whether the stresses farther north, north of the rupture, or northwest, are high enough to produce a similar quake, closer to Maui. Qualifier so I am not the source of another rumor: I am speculating here...I don't know what I am talking about, you don't have to sell your houses and swim for the mainland. On the other hand, I kind of doubt that anyone knows very much about these quakes, and that some of the abstracts are just a little better than speculation. John V.....any opinions? Or, better, any information? There is probably more information in the talks this week than in the abstracts, as they had a month or 2 to prepare talks after the late abstract deadline. Chris
