Occasionally I Will Learn Some Things

Hi All. Over the past couple of years I have made many contacts with various different people some of whose names I don’t remember now. Most of what I learn can be taken with a grain of salt, but occasionally I will learn some things that will change my way of thinking.

One such thing is a phrase that has come up from time to time. It is actually two phrases. One is “far-field triggering” and the other is “far-field aftershock” In both cases’ the meaning is that these quakes are far removed from the epicenter of the large event.

Based on what I have learned about these two phrases it would seem that the earthquake of Ml 3.9 that occurred in So. Indiana/Kentucky today may be a far-field triggering event, or a far-field aftershock. This event is the largest to occur within 200 km of this epicenter since Feb 5, 1994 when an Ml 4.2 occurred SW of this location. It is the second largest event in this area in the past ten years. There have been no earthquakes of Ml>=3.5 in this region since 1994. It should also be noted that an Ml 3.2 occurred near this epicenter following the previous Mw 7.0+ event in Turkmenistan on November 4, 1946. However there was also a large quake (7.3) on October 5, 1948 with nothing very significant following it.

The largest earthquake to have occurred within the 200 km radius of today’s epicenter occurred on October 31, 1895 and had Ml 6.2. This earthquake was reported over 1 million sq miles from Canada to Mississippi and Louisiana and from Georgia and Virginia to Kansas and South Dakota, 23 states in all. It was the second largest regional event after the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 (Mw 8+).
It should be noted that an Mw 7.0 est. in Turkmenistan occurred also in 1895 on July 8, 1895.

In the past when there have been earthquakes in the New Britain region there have been some large (Ml 5.0-6.5) earthquakes in So. California between 28 and 35 days after a large quake in New Britain. This would mean the current danger period would be between Dec. 13 and 20. Now having stated this does this mean that there is going to be a large quake in So. California somewhere between Dec. 13 and 20? I would have to say I really don’t know. I do know however that it’s going to be interesting to see what does occur between those dates. Take Care…Don in creepy town.

Most of the above data I found for myself, and some was given to me which, could not be verified.
