M4.7 or 4.9 Wheeler Ridge |
There was a M4.7 or 4.9 thrust earthquake at Wheeler Ridge, south of Bakersfield a little while ago. Ed Keller and his students did a lot of work on this propagating fold with underlying partly blind fault. I went there on a field trip. Tom Rockwell got very sick with Valley fever (fungus infection from soil) there (I think it was Tom). The S-dipping fault shows up on a gravel mine. It might have been interesting to map this in detail as the mine cut back through the fault. I'm sure the system is capable of a larger quake. I'm not sure whether this will happen soon...or 100 years from now.
