Re: Time To Check Out A Theory |
Hi All. Looks like there may be something to the theory about strong hurricanes shut down the earthquake engine in the US. This is the first day without an event of M=3 located in the U.S. or Alaska in the catalog of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) since Feb. 12, 2005, the only other day without an event of M=3 in the area in the past two years. This could be due to the hurricane making landfall today. In general these quiet conditions are associated with the western regions of the area for a period up to two days and then are interrupted by a light to moderate earthquake in the western U.S after which normal seismicity resumes. Of course the proper way to do is to sit back and watch it for about 50 years to see how often it repeats The quiet conditions in North America were not observed elsewhere today. Strong active conditions or moderate earthquakes were observed in New Zealand, Asia, Europe and the northwestern Pacific Rim.
