Tom Dibblee |
Tom Dibblee of Santa Barbara died yesterday. He produced 100s of geologic maps of California...he mapped, I think, a third of the state, starting in the 1930s. He made a presentation at a field trip stop this past spring...at a point above the harbor of Santa Barbara that used to be know as Dibblee Point. A paper from the early 1950s, I think Hill and Dibblee, was the first to recognize that the San Andreas fault had 100s of km of slip...this was before plate tectonics was accepted. The Dibblee Foundation has now published in color over 100 (I think) of his geologic maps. They have been of great assistance to my research...there are 5 of them on top of my home office table right now. There is a story, probably true, that when he worked for USGS he went in the field for a month and then asked to be reimbursed for his $14 of expenses.
