Keene Earthquake |
Hi All. The Mw5.0 near Keene was a strike-slip, with left lateral motion. This is opposite to what is normally observed for San Andreas type earthquakes, which is right lateral. The depth of the event was about 6.5 km. This earthquake occurred about 5 miles to the north of a M4.3 earthquake that occurred 25 January 2003. The 2003 M>4.3 event was part of a large swarm of earthquakes that consisted of more than 1000 smaller events. These earthquakes accommodate crustal thinning within the southern Sierra Nevada extension that occurs in both north-south and east-west directions. This quake is about 35 miles from the 07/21/1952 M>7.5 quake. I remember that quake quite well. However I don’t know if there were any foreshocks to that quake. There were however a bunch of aftershocks in the M>4.0+ range with some in the M>5.0 and M>6.0 range. My dad and I drove down to Visalia to help my aunt clean up the mess at her home. The house did okay, but the inside of the garage was trashed. There wasn’t a thing left sitting on the shelves. Still trying to figure that one out.
