Ivan, landslides, and oil rigs |
I post a lot when I am working on writing a paper.....I worked at Gulf Oil Co. and lived in New orleans in the early 1980s. Prof. James Coleman came to Gulf and gave a short course. He showed the first side-scan sonar that I had seen....which kind of looked like an aerial photo of the seafloor (but, is actually an image of acoustic reflectivity. An oil rig of some sort has rested on a mat on the seafloor, and you could see this mat print...half of which had slid a couple of km away. This is on a 1/2 deg slope...too small for the human eye to see (if you got rid of the water). During Hurricane Camille, a category 5 in, I think, 1969, I think 2 rigs were lost. The seafloor sediments offshore Mississippi delta are overpressured, so are very weak. 10 m-high waves passing over are going to increase and decrease the pressure at the seafloor by a bar....at least if the water is shallow...I don't know whether the peaks and troughs average out in deep water. This would tend to lead to underwater slides of already weak sediment. I'm sure that all the offshore rigs are evacuated...at least from eastern Louisiana on east. The world price of oil has increased because of this....I would think they would have to shut down production before evacuating a production platform.......
