It is a misconception that offshore southern California faults are mostly horizontal motion. Mark Legg has spoken about big tsunami sources in restraining bends on strike-slip faults-for example, all the Islands are getting squeezed up. I and others, including "KB on the beach" just submitted a paper to BSSA on a big fold immediately offshore Manhattan Beach (Shelf Projection anticlinorium). The northern Channel Islands are a big compressional fold above the Channel Islands thrust of Shaw and Suppe 1994 GSA Bulletin (see also Seeber and Sorlien 2000 GSA Bull.). Others and I are preparing to resubmit a proposal on really giant folds that are way the heck far offshore-Santa Rosa Ridge and extensions farther south-these are caused by blind thrust faults (or oblique right-thrust), and are 200+ km long by 50 km across. We have weak evidence that they are active. And, Legg, Kamerling have an in press paper showing some really big landslide sources-there are some kms-across blocks that have little support at the top of steep km-high escarpments.....Chris
