"Accurate earthquake prediction is impossible, and will be for the foreseeable future", says Robert Geller, a geophysicist at the University of Tokyo in Japan.

Sornette and Ouillon looked for such a signature in 'rockbursts' in South African mines2. These are subsidence events that are like miniature earthquakes; they mimic what happens when a major geological fault slips.

You'd think they would have gotten a few clues from those rockbursts....
