Thanks for the explanation of free earth oscillations Lowell, and for all the references. The compression of the ionosphere and troposphere does indeed seem to affect ground motion on sub-solar and anti-solar regions. I've read that we even lose some atmosphere during some major X-class CME's, as it get's squeezed out when the magnetosphere is greatly distorted.
