BW, A major problem with the geomagnetic storms and compression/expansion of the atmosphere is with satellites. They can be knocked about in their orbits when these things happen, and it takes days sometimes to find them again. The increased friction with the atmosphere can also cause the orbits to decay more rapidly than expected and loss of satellite service results. Since each satellite costs millions, that is not an insignificant financial loss.
