back from sea |
We got back from our data acquisition cruise a couple of days ago, and are in Izmir Turkey. The cruise was for seismic reflection (3 resolutions) and bathymetric data in the southern part of Marmara Sea. Results show very numerous active (post 14 ka) or young faults, pretty much all over the place. But these converge and combine eastward so that all that activity comes into Gemlik Bay and the city of Gemlik, which Wikipedia says has about 100,000 residents. It seems likely that long-term average slip rates are a couple of mm/yr. There was also all kinds of evidence of natural gas seeping from the sea floor: big gas flares imaged in the water column.
