I spent good chunks of the last couple of days looking at acoustic images of active faults that affect this city, Izmir, Turkey. I leave tomorrow for Istanbul. I was told that there were 16,000 fatalities in an earthquake here. I checked online, and Wikipedia says 16,000 casualties in 1688. The link gives some of the effects.
