Great Earthquake Hits Kamchatka??
|
Posted by Lowell on October 09, 2001 at 17:25:34:
It appears that a great earthquake struck Kamchatka about 30 minutes ago. Please refer to the far-field aftershock forecast for expected following events. An update will probably be made on this forecast after this event. This was considered a possibility as noted in the far-field forecast posted yesterday: " This is an area where earthquakes of MW>=8 are not uncommon, having occurred in 1792 (Ms 8.4); 1841 (Ms 8.4); 1899 (Ms 8.0); 1904 (Ms 8.3); 1923 (Ms 8.5); 1952 (Ms 8.5); 1955 (Ms 8.2); and 1959 (Ms 8.3). After the 1959 event there has been a long period of quiet without such an event (42 years). Interevent times between active periods in Kamchatka have been 49, 57, 24, 29, and the current 42-49 years. The area has probably accumulated sufficient strain since the last event of Ms>8 that another could hit within several years. So, these two events may be foreshocks to a great earthquake within several years."
