Large earthquake hits off Vancouver (Mw>5.5)

A moderately large earthquake hit in the vicinity of the swarm south of Vancouver
Island this evening. This is the largest event thus far in this swarm. Earthquakes
of this size very seldom occur in areas where the primary tectonic factor is volcanic.

Current parameters for this event are:

2001/09/14 04:45:15.2 48.8N 128.4W 33 Mb5.5 A NEIA VANCOUVER IS.

Seismograms show an event of this size or larger at this time.
