Well, at least there were no earthquakes yet reported in the area this morning. Volcanism is certainly a possibility. There are volcanic sites throughout the region of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado some fairly recent. In cross-section the Colorado Rocky mountains look much like a mid-ocean rift system with two ranges on either side of a central graben, and hot spots line the entire range. Some have suggested this is the surface manifestation of the continuation of a subducted east-Pacific rise - hard to say, but there is ample evidence of magma and volcanism in the region. I had not heard of the report of miners being scalded around 1900 but it would certainly add to the evidence of possible volcanism. Thanks for the legwork Scorpio.
