Topeka, Kansas earthquake (Ml 3.0)

NEIS is reporting a Ml 3.0 earthquake at a very unusual epicenter near Topeka, Kansas today with the following parameters: 24Jul2001 14:02:35 37.7N 97.0W LG=3.0 NEIS KANSAS Several days ago another unusual earthquake at about the same latitude was reported near Manitou Peak (Manitou Springs), Colorado of Ml 3.0 (see, Petra, I did answer your question, after all). This Kansas quake is the largest earthquake within 60 km of this epicenter since 1948 when a Ml 3.8 occurred about 30 km west of here. The epicenter to the west also experienced events of 4.3 and 3.8 in May and July 1919. The largest previous earthquake within 30 km of this epicenter occurred with Ml 2.2 on Feb 24, 1982. No events have been recorded in this area of southeastern Kansas since June 17, 1982 when a Ml 1.5 was recorded. The last earthquake recorded in the region of Kansas/Colorado between 37-38N and 105 - 96W was a Ml 3.2 on Jan 2, 1998. In the past 150 years 47 events have been recorded in this region, about 1 every 3 years.
