See also my earlier post below. Now that I have had some time, I can speak a bit more authoritatively on these two events off the northern Coast of California today. As usual, my memory was somewhat flawed. Here is a bit more accurate (from catalogs) recollection. There have been 7 events of Ml>=1.0 in the region 38.5-39.5N, 124-126W recorded by the NCSN group. Several additional events were located in this region, but later relocated in more mundane epicenters by NEIS. Of these 7, three have had Ml>=2.0, not including the two today. So, today we had as many events in this region of Ml>=2 as have been recorded in the past 20 years. Rare events indeed. Three events in the region have preceded moderate or large regional events within 10 days, four events have followed moderate or large regional events within one week. Table - Correlations of events 38-5-39.5; 124-126W with large regional events: Local event Ml Regional Event Location Local Events following large regional events 11-09-80 2.1 11-08-80 Ms 7.2 Off Coast No. California 04-28-84 --- 04-24-84 Ms 6.3 Morgan Hill, California 08-19-98 2.9 08-12-98 Ms 5.3 Santa Cruz, California 05-19-99 --- 05-15-99 Ms 5.6 Mammoth Lakes, California Local Events preceding large regional events 10-04-86 0.6 10-11-86 MS 4.7 So. of San Francisco CA 10-25-94 2.1 09-01-94 MS 7.0 Off Coast of No. California 04-05-96 1.9 04-15-96 Ms 5.6 Off Coast of Oregon
