Playtime
Posted by Lowell on July 08, 2001 at 12:53:18:

When Zima wants to play, she finds a grassy spot and starts running at her
fastest pace in circles until someone or animal starts chasing her. I do the same,
when I want to play, I let my mind run as fast as it can in circles until someone
starts chasing it.
One of the advantages of being a physicist (geo- or otherwise) is that we are
allowed to speculate on the nature of the universe no matter how far fetched
that speculation may be - it's all in a day's work.
So here is my daily speculation - what it the massive and nearly instantaneous
release of energy in a nuclear explosion or earthquake temporarily alters the
laws of physics in it's immediate vicinity - like a black hole or creates tachyons
which can move back in time. This physical breakdown in sub-space could move
backward and forward in time affecting the other laws of nature, such as magnetism.
Sound like something from star-trek. Well, believe it or not Star Trek has some of
the best scientific advisors around and nearly all ideas they use are based on
some speculation of a physicist somewhere.
