What have we here, nostalgia days? My first computer was the Sinclair QL, years ahead of it's time, better than the IBM PC. I tried to sell them too but the first question was always "Are they IBM compatible?". At work it was all mainframes. I don't recall the first one but it read punched cards and had its own room. The IBM 360 was a step up from that. Then there was a CDC-6800 followed by a VAX. I've used FORTRAN, PL/I and finally TrueBasic, once PCs got going. I prefer my own code to revising others.
