Re: Could El Mayor be quickening an Elsinore event?

Cool. Sure, it is logical/good earthquake geology that El Mayor advanced an Elsinore quake. But, it may have also anvanced a quake on the same latitude for the San Jacinto system. If a San Jacinto tight-lateral quake occurs first, it may retard an Elsinore quake.

I wonder if enough paleo-seismology trenches have been done on the Elsinore-Whittier to know whether there have ever been quakes that have ruptured through from near the border to the LA metro area. I wonder if the geology/topography provides enough potential trench sites to do this.

One thing you could do with your map is to use only those quakes with focal mechanisms (slip), by color, That way around Brawley/Salton etc we could see how the normaal slip quakes and strike-slip interact. This has been done by others in the past (Magistrale, Ambruster and Seeber), Nicholson and Plesch have been doing a lot of work in 3D with quakes in last 2 or 3 years.
