there is a strong effort by SCEC using undergrad interns to improve the SCEC VDO, which can display the Community fault model including earthquakes in 3D. I talked to someone and he or she or both did not think it could do cross sections. But, better, it is possible that it may be able to do 3D views of quakes: for example, a view down the surface of a fault.

I used SCEC VDO last winter and found it frustrating compared to Gocad, but I could get used to it and it could improve.

You might want to look into it and consider joining that effort in some way. Maybe unlikely that you could get paid later on to do this, but not impossible?

Somewhere in my pile of junk there is a card with SCEC VDO web site, but you can probably search for it.
