EM Signal Backlog - August 20, 2012

As stated, my personal earthquake forecasting program is back running again. But, I have a backlog of about 600 EM Signals that need to be processed. My existing EM Signal file already contains records for something like 4000 signals detected over the years.

Each signal can require as much as a minute of typing to process. So, 600/60 = 10 hours of work. Fortunately I really only need to process about 200 signals for March, April, May, and June of 2012. Older signals that also need to be processed go back to about July of 2010. That extremely powerful March, 2011 earthquake in Japan created a virtual tidal wave of low intensity EM Signals. I never ran into anything even remotely close to that before.

Roger (who is away from EarthWaves for a week or two) was wondering why this isn’t an automatic process. One of the answers is that a fair number of these signals are Ear Tones. And unless you have a hearing aid that can be hooked to a computer that means that the data have to be recorded manually with a pencil and paper. I usually keep track of the Ear Tone time, duration, and intensity.

The ones that I detect are never directional. You can face any direction or lean back or forward and the intensity stays the same. They are also never heard in both ears at the same time. Their frequency is something like 7500 cycles per second.

Most other people (perhaps 1 person in 1000) hear tones that are in that frequency range. Some hear signals down around 50 cycles per second. Some people hear them in both ears at the same time. And with some the signals are directional if I remember correctly. If they face a different direction they get louder or softer.

One of the interesting features of the signals is that two people who can hear them might be standing next to one another. And one person will hear the signal and the other will not.

Earlier this year I had a talk with a professional audiologist about these signals. And I was surprised that she knew about them. She stated that with some autistic children, they need to get rid of all of the fluorescent lights in the room and replace them with the older style light bulbs. That is because the children can hear a tone connected with the fluorescent lights. And it distracts them and makes it more difficult for them to concentrate on some task.

One of the things that I have had to do to get my forecasting program to run more efficiently is purchase a copy of the Dragon Naturally Speaking software. I had an older version that I regarded as being useless and also feel that way about the Windows Vista speech to text program. However, that latest version of Dragon can be fairly accurate in my opinion.

One of its features is that you can tell it “Open and run (some computer program).” And it will start that computer program running such as a Perl program. That is an easy way to add the present GMT time to a text file.

These are personal opinions.
