Strong EM Signals believed to be associated with solar storm, and earthquake fault zone and/or volcanic area activities were detected at the following times:

The picture at the bottom of this post is a record of current solar and geomagnetic storm activity as reported by the NOAA Space Weather site.

In many years of doing earthquake forecasting work I have never detected such a large group of strong EM Signals like that which had no clear pattern to them. And on only two occasions have large groups of signals like that been detected where there was a clear pattern within the signals.

One of those two occasions was on May 18 of 2011. Those signals are presently believed to have been associated with underwater volcano activity occurring off the Northwest coast of the U.S. around that time. The other occasion was on January 25, 2001, shortly before a catastrophic earthquake occurred in India.

Theories presently being tested propose that these EM Signals can be generated when geomagnetic energy associated with a solar storm, earthquake fault zone activity, volcano activity, or hurricane activity, interacts at very specific times with a fault zone where an earthquake is getting ready to occur or with ground or perhaps airborne activity near an active volcano.

Mount Etna in Italy reportedly became active once again on March 4, 2012. So, that volcano would be a possible candidate for the source of the EM Signals.

However, one or more earthquake fault zones where powerful earthquakes are getting ready to occur would also be likely. And so, formal Earthquake Warnings such as this one are being circulated.

When the original source of EM Signal energy is an earthquake fault zone as present theories propose was the case with the highly destructive January 26, 2001 earthquake in India, my date indicate to me that the expected earthquake will likely occur fairly soon, perhaps within a day, after the EM Signals are detected.

However, when the original source of energy is solar storm activity as is believed to be the case for these latest signals, the EM Signals appear to be simply indicating that the earthquake or earthquakes are getting ready to occur. And it or they could be delayed for days, weeks, or even months.

There is another popular theory that solar storm activity can actually produce physical and chemical changes in a fault zone where an earthquake is getting ready to occur and cause the earthquake to occur months or perhaps even years before it would otherwise occur. One group in Europe is reportedly doing some research to see if that theory can be verified.

Because of the complexity of, or lack of pattern in those recently detected EM Signals, I am not sure how to go about generating possible location data for this expected seismic activity. And some thought is being given to that matter.

For now I am largely recommending that other earthquake researchers check their records of local precursor data for late March 5 and early March 6 of 2012 to see if there was anything suspicious looking.
