Costa Rica Earthquake - May 14, 2011

The following earthquakes have occurred:

2011/05/13 23:35:53 37.38N 141.40E 38 6.2 Japan Area
2011/05/13 22:47:55 10.10N 84.26W 70 6.0 Costa Rica
NEIS Data

One of the main goals of my forecasting program is to provide people with some idea regarding when and where significant seismic activity might be about to occur. And if people were checking my Data.html Web page they would have seen that on my latest forecast chart there were line peak groups around both 84 W and 141 E.

That chart has now been updated and can be seen below. And the line peak groups at those longitudes might not be quite as clear. It will change again as newer versions are stored on my Data.html Web page.

It would not be surprising to see the 141 E area line peak groups as there has been so much aftershock activity for that March 11, 2011 Japan area earthquake. But I don’t believe that anyone was expecting any Costa Rica earthquake activity.

I am not aware of any forecasting groups that are watching for possible approaching seismic activity in the Costa Rica area. But if there were any, then by checking my forecast chart on a regular basis and observing my earthquake warning and advisory notes they might have been able to identify something in that data that would have confirmed that the earthquake was on the way.

There are quite a few groups watching for possible approaching earthquakes along the U.S. West Coast. And I believe that my Year Chart data show that my forecasting method does have the ability to spot the approach of some coastal area earthquakes.

So, that advance warning information combined with other types of forecast data might (hopefully) enable earthquake forecasting personnel to tell when a significant earthquake is headed for the U.S. West Coast.

What are government officials and their scientists expecting? Do they think that someday the flying saucer people will magically appear and tell everyone that an approaching earthquake is going to occur at a specific time and location with an exact magnitude and depth? People need to work with whatever data are available, perfect or not!
