could near record flooding at New Madrid trigger quakes? |
The link is to the Mississippi River guage at New Madrid. The forecast is for record flooding. When I flew across the country in 1993 and looked out I could see that those record floods made a very wide zone...kms wide (maybe 3 km?). Maybe not likely, but I wonder if either the load or increased pore pressure could trigger any quakes? Just large enough to show up on the USGS list (M2.5+). Beth was talking about Texas quakes on another thread: there is now an uneven line or arc of quakes from Gulf of California to west Texas to central teaxes to Oklahoma to Arkansas to a M2.1 west of New Madrid. I think this means nothing.
