Oh yes, the game does require some free time. But in my playing this I've learned a lot about geology. There have been many pictures where I recognized the geology but was surprised about where the particular example was from.

There was one recent game that I could have sworn was somewhere in northern Spain. I found terrain almost exactly like it, figuring I just hadn't found the exact spot. Turned out to be in Kyrgyzstan. Even the vegetation was similar.
