Self-promotion in and of itself isn't really a problem. We all do it to one degree or another. Promoting nothing is, and it can be overpromoted.

A long long time ago in what seems a lifetime far far away, I used to work at Knott's Berry Farm. There was a street skit between the local sheriff and a snake oil salesman. The salesman would point out that he had a BS, MS, and a PhD. The Sheriff responds by reminding the audience that we all know what BS stands for, MS is more of the same, and PhD is piled higher and deeper.

Now don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with discussing new ideas and exploring different ways of thinking, for if we don't, we stagnate. But insisting that the sky is some other color when it is so obviously blue....

[sigh]

I guess I just have a hard time ignoring nothing.
