I saw that report, too. Although Michio Kaku is worthy of respect as a theoretical physicist and for his outreach efforts to bring science to the masses, he certainly seems to have forgotten to do his homework on this one.

Although, some of the blame should be laid on the media. Since Kaku has somewhat of a 'celebrity' status, he is tapped to do all sorts of science and quasi-science media pieces. It's almost as if the media thinks he knows it all. He even weighed in on the "mystery missile" in California a few months back and much to my dismay didn't give the right answer then either.

I think Carl Sagan would have done better - either getting his facts before the interview or, more likely, referring the reporter to a qualified geophysicist.

Come to think of it, why did the media go to Kaku at all? Certainly the reference that informed the reporter of this story would have contained mention of the researchers who have been monitoring these events? Should the reporters have not gone to that source?

I take back the "some of the blame". I say most of the blame. Not all, because Kaku should have known better.

Anyway, it is very interesting that the Yellowstone Caldera is doing these breathing exercises. I'd like to find more reputable journalism and documentary discussion on this event.
