I think Yellowstone did the same magnitude of inflation a decade or two ago. I was very impressed by a book on science by a non-scientist, Bill Bryson, which is called "A short history of nearly everything". It seemed he go it right, and I did not see problems with the geology part. But, specialists in the various fields did complain that he did not get it right. I suppose I had no college biology and did poorly in my one chemistry (so was required to take geochemistry in grad school), but otherwise I like to think my general knowledge of science is good.
