EARTHQUAKE FORECASTING AND TRIGGERING RESEARCH PROJECT UPDATE
Posted by EQF August 31, 2010

An important earthquake related project involving international research personnel that has been taking up a lot of my time during 2010 is now largely completed as far as my personal input is concerned. And my efforts are now returning to focusing on my own earthquake forecasting and research work.

Step 1. in this restarted effort is now finished. An updated copy of my Perl – Gnuplot languages based Etdprog.exe earthquake forecasting and research computer program has been prepared for circulation by E-mail. And another researcher has the program running on his computer and is checking to see how well it performs.

That circulation effort was interesting by itself. The zipped program is 75 megabytes in size and had to be separated into 10 parts so that it could be transmitted by E-mail. When it arrived, his virus software or his unzip program quietly removed all of the .exe .lnk and .bat files from the extracted files without telling anyone. It took a good part of a day to determine which files got deleted and to determine how to get them through the virus software.

With the next version of that E-mail circulation effort, all of the .exe .lnk and .bat programs will probably have their extensions removed or changed to something like .dat Then a .bat (Windows batch) file will be included that will automatically restore the extensions for those files once they have been extracted from the zip files.

Step 2. in this effort will probably involve storing a downloadable, experimental, freeware version of the program on my new Web site. And regular updates will be made for the program’s support files etc. Researchers around the world will be able to download copies of the program and update files and run them on their own computers. Governments could actually use this computer program to forecast some of their own significant earthquakes if they were to invest a little time and energy into learning how to do that.

FORECASTING AND RESEARCH PROGRAM FEATURES

1. Earthquake Forecasting - The Etdprog.exe earthquake forecasting computer program can be used to tell when and where at least some significant earthquakes are going to occur.

2. Earthquake Triggering Research - The computer program can be used as a platform or framework for doing highly advanced earthquake triggering research. It relies on probability equations related to how earthquakes are being triggered. And it should be extremely easy for researchers around the world to improve the quality of those probability equations. If and when that is done the program should eventually provide us with a high quality picture of how earthquakes in fault zones around the world are being triggered.

3. Computer Program Capabilities - The Perl – Gnuplot languages Etdprog.exe earthquake forecasting computer program is designed in such a manner that computer programs written with other languages such as Basic or Python etc. can interact with it. The Etdprog.exe computer program would send those programs information through files or “data pipes,” collect information from them, and then display the results in tables and on charts and maps. The other language programs would not need to have their own graphics routines. The Etdprog.exe program can also create PNG picture files from data that it generates. It is supposed to be able to import PNG picture files such as world maps and then use them for its plot backgrounds. And it is likely that it could be modified and run at my new Web site under the control of Web page data input screens. The Web site program could even process and respond to commands and data sent to it via E-mail letters.

UPDATES

Updates for this effort will most likely be posted to the EarthWaves Internet Bulletin Board where I use EQF for a heading name.

Some updates are being circulated through the sci.geo.earthquakes Internet Newsgroup and by E-mail.

These are personal opinions.
