Re: Earthquake Forecasting And Triggering Research Project Update August 31, 2010 |
Remember, those were zip files. The real files are much larger. The actual forecasting Perl program in a .pl form is about 300,000 bytes in size. The .exe version that includes a compiler inside it is about 3,000,000 bytes in size. The largest support file is about 15,000,000 bytes in size. The remaining support files are relatively small. Since this was meant to be a startup debugging operation I included files that the forecasting program would normally create when it runs. And they were the ones that were so large. The program normaly has to create them. And then it saves them and reuses them. If it had to create them each time it ran it would probably take several hours before any data were generated. By reusing those very large files it can reduce the run time to less than a minute for some operations. Those types of files probably won't be included in the freeware Web site download. People won't need them for the types of applications they will be running. Finally, E-mail notices regarding that program were sent earlier today to quite a few of the top earthquake research groups around the world, or at least the ones that I know about. The notices included a fair amount of actual data that were not in my EarthWaves posting. Some of the E-mails were even sent to USGS officials. I would expect that those notices were likely ignored. But then, that would have been their choice. They cannot now state that they have never been told about the effort.
