Re: Haiti earthquake: response

Dear Chris,
I believe that what you are proposing is truly amazing. I was just thinking that for all of what organizations do in this world, there is little devoted to reinforcing structures to withstand quake damage in places such as Haiti and I believe that much of this is based upon a lack of understanding and a lack of education when it comes to earthquakes. Hurricanes come often and can be predicted, but even though that paper (I think you posted it, Chris?) clearly stated the danger to Port au Prince and to Santo Domingo, nothing was really done to prepare. Worse, as we listened to CNN the misinformation (i.e., "the first major quake in over 200 years in the region") made it sound like to possibility of this happenening was so remote that it could not have been foreseen. Boy, did that make my 16-year-old mad and she spent quality time correcting people online, stopping short of calling a couple of them dumb---es for thinking that it could not happen again in the Caribbean in the next 200 years!
I wish you luck in this endevour, Chris. I see how important it is but I have no idea how to convince the rest of the world, particularly with the level of misunderstanding out there.
Keep us posted and if you have any ideas how to help get you published ( a FB "Publish Chris" Fan page?) let me/us know.
Beth
