A widely circulated story is that after Galileo told everyone that celestial objects revolved around the sun rather than the Earth he was put in prison and tortured until he recanted and accepted the “politically correct” view that all of the heavenly objects did in fact revolve around the Earth. However, one account that I read stated that he was just placed under a form of house arrest.

The point is that at times, when even genius level scientists are put under enough pressure they will say whatever they think will get or keep them out of trouble.

If you are wrong with your opinion and people listen to you then you might consider what the consequences could be for innumerable people around the world. In contrast, if I myself am wrong with how I am interpreting my data it would basically just result in some wasted electrons.
