It all depends on how you measure it. I've seen two units used so far. Energy magnitude started at 7.9, went to 8.0, and last I saw is 8.1. Moment magnitude I saw was 8.3. Not sure what the 8.0 is on the main USGS page. No unit is given. As always with quakes of this size, the magnitudes are not going to remain constant. Give it a few months to reliably settle.
