Although the deformation is distributed across many faults in China, the plate motions in SE Asia are considerable, much more than in the Eastern US. So it would not surprise me if the attenuation (wave damping) there is more similar to the west coast than the Eastern US. Someone has probably measured this, but that is my guess.
