Be VERY careful. I would definitely check with the park folks about taking your favorite long walk. It sounds as if the VOG problem depends a lot on which way the wind is blowing. As I recall from my visit years ago, it is very windy and cool up there on Kilauea.

I did read that a couple of observation platforms had been destroyed near the caldera area.
