Thanks Chris and Penny,

I have been to Kilauaea (sp?) several times on different trips, but my youngest daughter, now 12, has never been to Hawaii and our oldest daughter (who missed her flight back to Maui today and is staying another night) doesn't remember us taking her when she was about ten.

Thanks for all the warnings. There is a number you can call starting at 7:30 am that will tell you if it is safe to visit the volcano that day. Muchas gracias for all the cool suggestions. We are also considering a trip up to the observatory at Mana Kea. You can only drive so far up, then you have to rest for half an hour to acclimate to the air quality, then they take you to the summit in four-wheel-drive vehicles.

I'll keep you all posted. We have Senna for one more day, so I don't know what we will do to fill a half-day tomorrow. Her flight leaves at 4:35, only today, left at 4:25 without her. Traffic to the airport was a nightmare.
