Cathryn,
The bed remained pretty much in place and we were rotated on the first jolt. Because the head of the bed was against the west wall, I think it prevented much movement. I felt like the initial movement was to the north west and snapped back in the opposit direction. We had a plant outside with a long stem sticking out at an angle. It also had been moved 180 degrees. Some other objects showed some rotation. It might also explain the slight dizzy disoriented feeling right after the quake. I think I have read that the 7.4 in the Ferndale area also showed some rotation on cystern lids.

The house was a mess and all north south running walls badly cracked. I have a very heavy antique bookcase which was running north south. It broke the earthquake ties, moved an inch away from the wall and did not fall over. Almost everything along east west running walls was trashed or thrown to the opposite wall.

Our street , which runs east west, showed cracks after the quake that were some 130 to 150 feet apart and ran all the way across the street. If you followed the crack to the houses along the street, that is where the most sereve damage was done to the structure.
Bob
