looking a little longer at the loop, I think there is a convergence of upper level winds...the air has to go somewhere, and it is sinking in the cloud-free slot over central California. The upper level winds are from the south to the south of the slot, and from the north of northwest to the north of the slot. This probably has something to do with the ripples.
