Re: Missouri River flood

I biked down to and then along the Katie trail...to a few miles SE of Rocheport. There is a remarkable amount of debris coming down the Missouri...mostly logs, with logs packed together as floating islands up to 30 m across. The current is really fast...about 15 km/hr in the middle, and about half that along the banks. The level was about 2 m below the Katie trail. I bike the same section last weekend...it has come up about 5 m since then...which in turn was very much higher than last fall/winter. The forecast is for a drop in the level today related to levee breaks upstream, then a rise to about 1 1/2 m higher than yesterday this weekend. Yesterday, streams flowing into the Missouri were flowing the wrong way...flowing upstream, with water backed up at least 6 km upstream. So, fields will flood that far from the Missouri if the level comes up much more.
They have been building a Jersey barrier (concrete) with sandbags and gravel on top of the Katie trail (old railroad bed) at Rocheport.
I'm old enough, out of shape enough, and was working too much so the bike ride wiped me out and I fell asleep at 6:00 rather than working on my proposal...
Columbia is generally elevated and the nearest part to the Missouri is a few km away, so no river flooding problems here (some local flooding dues to heavy rain last weekend).
