Kettleman City Earthquakes

Hi All. Things are starting to get interesting near Kettleman City. There have been 5 quakes in the area that started with a 3.3Ml on 04/24/2001.

I can’t say with 100% assurance, but I think these quakes are associated with the Great Valley fault and that the quakes are located in segment GV14, which to best of my knowledge is the last segment. Just inside 20 miles north of this small swarm there was a quake with a magnitude of 5.9Ms on 08/04/1985. Just north of this quake was the Coalinga quake of 05/02/1983. It is located in segment GV13 of the Great Valley fault.

On 04/19/1892 there was earthquake near Vacaville and was in the range of 6.4 to 6.6 est.
This quake is now known as the Vacaville-Winters earthquake.

Various characteristics of the 04/19/1892 Vacaville-Winters earthquake, which is in GV04 are notably similar to those associated with the 04/02/1983 Coalinga earthquake. For example, (1) both were located along the western margin of the Great Valley and are the two largest historical seismic events known to have occurred along this boundary; (2) the main shocks in both earthquakes were in the range of magnitude 6 to 7; (3) neither sequence produced obvious primary surface rupture indicative of a causative fault; and (4) both events occurred in areas devoid of surface evidence of recent active faulting.

I’m can’t saying were going to have another Coalinga type quake, but neither can I say were not. What I can say is that for now I’m going sit back, put my heels up and wait and see what happens. Take Care…Don in creepy town.
