Q for John Vidale, Chris or ???? |
Howdy All, Somebody shared this link over on Bopps forum. It is a brief by Roger Bilham of Colorado U. about a rapid creep event on the Superstitian Hills fault near the Salton Sea. I am wondering if it is normal for a fault structure like this to rapidly deform (aseismicly) on the surface. I am thinking that this is the alluvial infill catching up with the deeper portion of the fault, thus no earthquake. Or it could mean that the stress on that portion of the fault is critical. Is this normal? Just wondering if other faults do this also. This is Bilhams parent web site, the link is to the article. http://cires.colorado.edu/~bilham/ Thanx for any input...
