John and others...I decade and a half ago I read the BSSA article on animal behavior before the 1975 earthquake in China...snakes frozen half way out of the ground, etc. I think I've heard in passing that maybe that prediction (everyone being evacuated) was exaggerated or some such thing...and I guess it is assumed the animals felt foreshocks. But...still....and the fact that the Chinese failed to predict the deadline Tanshan (sp?) quake the next year has little to do with the 1975 quake...
If I see all the moles in our backyard come out during the daytime I'm going to wonder what is going on...although we are a couple hundred km from New Madrid and across strike (meaning not anywhere near that long belt of seismicity..
