Re: Maybe Why Some People Sense Earthquakes Before They Occur

Hello Dona:

Scientists have been studying animal behavior since the fifties to try to establish a link to earthquakes. So far although enormous reports of anecdotal evidence has been reported, there is little scientific evidence to support the hypothesis that animal behavior can predict earthquakes. In my opinion, if all those anecdotal reports were significant, it wouldn't be so difficult to prove the link with conslusive scientific research. Part of the problem I have with the anecdotal evidence is that the assumption is made that anomalous animal behavior may occur days and weeks before the actual earthquake. That kind of hokey inference not only muddies the water, it makes it almost certain that an earthquake will occur that will confirm the behavior. I don't think there is any convincing evidence that animals can sense earthquakes immediately prior to earthquakes except for the obvious reaction to the shaking ground beneath their feet. The most likely link may indeed be within birds that presumably use magnetite for navigation, such as homing pigeons, but if that were the case, why wouldn't it be a simple matter to correlate anomalous pigeon responses to magnetic fluctuations recorded on magnetometers?

The fact is that animals behave in strange ways all the time. The only behavior that is remembered remembered and recorded is that which followed by an earthquake. If that is not biased data, what is?

Don
