Mt. Fuji And The 1700 Megaquake

Hi All. Over the past couple of years there has been a lot of talk about the next megaquake off the coast of Washington.

Some very strong evidence indicates that the last megaquake was on 26 Jan. 1700.

I’m fairly reasonable sure that this is nothing more then a coincidence, but the last time Mt. Fuji erupted was in 1707.

As of the 13th of February, according to JMA, a large number of low-frequency earthquakes had occurred around 15 km below Fuji volcano since last October; 133, 222, 144, and 36 times in October, November, December and January 2001, respectively. The daily numbers were 33, 39, 44, and 53 times on October 11, 12, 16, and December 18, respectively. The maximum magnitude was 2.2 for one on Oct. 11, and quakes larger than M2.0 occurred 7 times during November-December.

I got to thinking about that eruption and what is going on there at present time. To date I haven’t been able to find anything on the web about the history of the volcano before 1700. I’m fairly sure that there were a number of low-frequency earthquakes before the 1707 eruption, but because of the nature of these quakes it’s rather doubtful that any of them were felt until just before the eruption. That being the case there could have been activity long before 1700.

Most if not all of the activity in the Pacific occur along the “ring of fire” which of course is the Pacific Plate. It is the movement of this plate in conjunction with the other plates that surround it that causes earthquakes and volcanos. With this in mind could it not be a possibility that the movement of these plates caused both the megaquake and the eruption of Mt. Fuji and what were seeing now at Mt. Fuji is a precursor to the next megaquake? Take Care…Don in creepy town.
