gaps, 1946

Glen..looking at the Gap link, you would not expect any area except the 2 gaps to be capable of something over M8 if subduction zone need to re-accumulate all the strain released in previous Great earthquakes...unless the shallow or deep part of the locked part of the subduction zone are able to break independently. I guess I would not want to rule out a M8.0 but a M8.5+ seems unlikely...except for Shumagin I wonder where the 1946 tsunami earthquake was on that map....made the deadly tsunami in Hawaii...killed quite a few in Hilo..it was a bit of a slow earthquake so its magnitude was lower than you would expect for the size of the tsunami...my father was in the islands at the time and has some stories...he was inland and did not see the waves but saw the after effects.

Might be interesting to find a similar map with the outlines and dates of ruptures for all M7.5 quakes since 1890 or so....

I was going to work on a paper on Ross Sea but am still a little stoned from anesthesia for a common medical test you get when you are 50...clean bill of health. I guess we are not supposed to speak of the "no longer posting" but hope Petra is doing well on her health issues...my critical personal post below her last one is unrelated to wishing her well on health...
Chris
