Istanbul early warning |
Yesterday I was briefly shown the computers and instruments that make up the center of the earthquake early warning system of Istanbul. Apparently Istanbul has one of the densest networks of accelerometers in the world. Every day each instrument sends in a random acceleration as a test and a map is created that shows the simulated damage. If there is a real earthquake, this system will very rapidly show the pattern of real damage, so that emergency responders can react quickly. But, there is also some warning before the strong ground motion arrives...depending on where the earthquake rupture is. What I neglected to ask is what happens with a 5 s, or 20 s warning: what is done?
